Schizophrenia
Schizophrenia is the most serious of the psychiatric pathologies and it affects around 1% of the general population. It manifests at an early age with the onset of many cases appearing in adolescence. The most commonly-recognised symptoms are dellusions and hallucinations although others (emotional flatness, agitation, immobility, withdrawal) may also be present.
It is a chronic illness and patients suffer frequent relapses. It tends to produce a deterioration in the main psychic functions (reductions in attention span, in memory, in concentration and it impairs the patient's thought process and ability to associate ideas) as well as affecting the patient's social and working interaction.
At present it is thought that schizophrenia is more likely to be caused by biological-hereditary factors as opposed to psychological-environmental factors. The illness can be treated with antipsychotic medication which alleviates the symptoms and slows down the progression of the illness, thus markedly improving the patient's condition.
