Treatment of Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder was classified as a mental illness in the nineteenth century (it was named Manic-Depressive Psychosis) and it characteristically involves mood swings from states of excitation and hyperactivity (mania) to other states of depression. Please note that medically speaking the word "mania" does not have the same meaning as when used colloquially. In the first case, the term refers to the state of euphoric elation present in the manic phase of a bipolar disorder, while in everyday use the term would imply rarity.

Recognised in all cultures, bipolar disorder is relatively common (0.8% - 1.0% of the general population) and it appears at an early age (around 30 years old). Although it is a disorder with a tendency towards chronification, there are currently treatments available for elation episodes (mania) as well as for the depressive states and stabilizing medication is used to control fluctuations by regulating the transitions from manic to depressive states and vice-versa.
